I think we all know by now that I am One Direction fan and when I say fan I mean an obsessed human who blasts their music in her car while driving to work. So yes, I cared (a little too much) when Zayn Malik decided to leave the ridiculously successful group. Now, I was never a big Zayn fan but I appreciated what he brought to the group. He always seemed uncomfortable when they made any sort of appearance as a group and it looked like it pained him to sing their songs. So, I guess it wasn’t an actual surprise when he decided to leave the group. Well, I was not ready for Zayn Malik’s new single: “Pillow Talk”.
Yes, Zayn Malik has officially launched his solo career and if his newest single is any indication of what’s to come, my music playlist is about to be full of Zayn Malik music soon. “Pillow Talk” is a complete departure from anything that One Direction ever did. The song is a downtempo, R&B, smooth introduction of what we should expect from Zayn.
So we’ll piss off the neighbours
In the place that feels the tears
The place to lose your fears
Yeah, reckless behavior
A place that is so pure, so dirty and raw
Be in the bed all day, bed all day, bed all day
Fucking you, and fighting on
So yes, the subject matter is … mature and provocative. I just hope that Zayn doesn’t get stuck in this endless cycle of trying to prove that he’s so much more than what One Direction was. We get it, you’re a grown up and you enjoy fucking but please, please do not make every song about this. I have seen too many ex-boy band members get stuck in this cycle; remember Jc Chasez and “Some Girls (Dance with Women”?
Since leaving One Direction, Zayn has made it a point to say how different his music is going to be from the music he created with One Direction, we understand, you’re so much more than a boy band member. This guy has absolutely nothing to prove, the fans are already willing to purchase anything that he releases, so I truly hope that he chooses to release good music that actually means something.
I am on this ride. I am all aboard the Zayn Malik train and I truly hope that he doesn’t let me down. All in all “Pillow Talk” is a great “debut” single. The chorus alone will definitely makes its way into your daily life, get used to it.
