Remember when Meredith made McDreamy the house of candles?
Remember the build-up and the complicated and the infuriating and the falling in love?
I love a good love story.
My favorite part about love storylines is when they drag on the falling in love. When they make it subtle, when they care about each other at different times, when there’s some healthy amount of jealousy but they inevitable find their way to each other. I love exploring the complicated ways that humans keep finding a way to coexist with each other.
I have been watching One Day at a Time for three wonderful seasons and the love story wasn’t evident at first. Maybe I’m a little slower than most though. Admittedly, I didn’t even notice it until the last couple of episodes of season 3. I was so wrapped up in falling in love with Rita Moreno and the consistent life lessons thrown at the audience every episode that the clear chemistry between two characters kept flying under the radar.
Then I saw it; it was subtle and wrapped in friendship but the possible love story was right there: Schneider and Penelope. Now that I’ve seen it, I need it more than ever. I have never needed Netflix to pick up a TV show more! You cannot give me a glimpse of an epic love story and not follow through with the feelings.
One Day at a Time feels like a necessary show; it presents you with a mostly LATINX cast while providing you with a show that is relatable to everyone. It carries heavy conversations while sprinkling the perfect amount of humor throughout each episode. It has freaking Rita Moreno, which should be enough of a reason to watch the show if you ask me.
Now back to Schneider and Penelope: it’s in the moments where they accepted their own flaws, it’s when they called each other on their shit, it’s when they laughed and cried together and though I envy the friendship that they’ve built, I absolutely need to see their storyline span into the romantic realm. It’s not the love story I expected but it’s the love story that I deserve.
So have I convinced you to start watching One Day at a Time yet?
