It is absolutely depressing to think that One Direction is going on hiatus after the release of their latest album. That’s right you heard me right, I am depressed by this fact. It’s like *NSYNC announcing their “short break” all over again. One Direction, just like *NSYNC did, have released their best material right before their break. Made in the A.M. contains the group’s best songs and I don’t care who finds out that I’m completely obsessed with this album.
The album kicks off with “Hey Angel”, if you’re older (like some people may be) the first couple of chords may remind you of a U2 song, but as soon as the vocals begin you come to the realization that this is One Direction and this is the best (vocally) we’ve heard the group. The ride continues with “Drag Me Down” which was their first single off of the album. This song stays true to One DIrection and the music they first released. It is a pure pop song with a catchy chorus and I love every minute of it. “Perfect” follows, I won’t say it’s my favorite but it’s definitely up there. I appreciate the autobiographical lyrics and the vocals are very Harry Styles heavy, which make for a very happy Julie. Plus the song contains one of my favorite lyrics:
And if you like cameras flashing every time we go out
And if you’re looking for someone to write your breakup songs about
Of course the album carries the obligatory “boy band ballads”, some better than others, but all beautiful in their own way. “Infinity” was one of the singles that were released before the album and by far one of my favorite ballads in the album. “If I Could Fly” and “Long Way Down” do take a moment to warm up to them, that may just be me because I tend to prefer a more upbeat One Direction. *Update* I’m on my 5th replay of the album and “If I Could Fly” and “Long Way Down” have definitely grown on me and I think they’re two of the most vocally strong songs in the album.
“End of the Day” is definitely one of my favorite songs on the album. I love that they change the tempo throughout the entire song and of course the chorus is bound to get stuck in your head. One Direction promised a new, more mature song and they absolutely delivered. A perfect example of this is “Never Enough”, the song gives me strong jungle vibes and it’s unlike anything that the guys have done previously.
The album has hints of older generations in it, with “Olivia” they show us how The Beatles have influenced their music. In “What a Feeling” you get a bit of a 70’s disco dance party vibe, that will force you to have a dance party in your car. The beginning chords of “Wolves” reminds me of a 90’s sitcom and I mean that in the best way possible.
While listening to the album you definitely get a bittersweet feeling, because at the end of the day this is still their “see you later” album and some of the songs showcase those emotions (in different ways). “Love You Goodbye” is a song about a relationship ending and wanting one last night together. I mean, we’ve all been there right? When you know something is about to end but you try to hold on to it for a little bit longer.
Hey, hey, hey
Oh, why you’re wearing that to walk out of my life?
Hey, hey, hey
Oh, even though it’s over you should stay tonight
Hey, hey, hey
If tomorrow you won’t be mine
Won’t you give it to me one last time?
Every track on the album is worth discussing but I’d like to close this review by discussing “History”. The song “History” is the perfect present to their fans. The song is a celebration of everything that One Direction, their crew and the fans have gone through. It’s the kind of song that will bring chills down your spine when they perform it live. It contains simple lyrics and yet it carries such an important message.
I don’t know what the future holds for One Direction, but I for one, hope they come back and that they’re better than ever. Made In The A.M. is a great album, from beginning to end and it is worth every penny. The sound is mature, the vocals are strong, the beats are intricate; you won’t be disappointed.
