Every year I say that I’m going to stop watching Grey’s Anatomy and every year there I am the night of the season premiere ready to get my heart broken by Shonda Rhimes again. So here we are in Season 12; Derek Shepherd has passed away (I’m still not okay) and Meredith Grey is beginning a new chapter of her life. This episode had a season 1 feeling; from Meredith’s house, to Meredith taking in strays, to all of the doctors meeting up in one spot to discuss something interesting that happened, to the episode being centered around a heart-wrenching medical emergency. It felt very nostalgic to sit through the episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it
The medical emergency was two girls who stepped in front of a train and throughout the first half of the episode we find out that the two girls are in love and they felt like the only way that they could be together is by dying together. So Shonda Rhimes does it again, grabs you right in the feels right away so that it’s hard to walk away. The thing that I love about Shonda Rhimes is that she has a beautiful way of implementing real social issues into her television shows. The episode had an underling message about bullying, which was beautifully placed in between the LGBTQ rights issue.
I was reminded about how much I love Callie Torres this episode, she is a strong bisexual character who makes no apologies for the person that she is. I fell in love with Callie when I first saw her dancing in her underwear and the only thing that has stayed constant throughout all of these years of watching this show is my love for her. She truly shined in this episode and if things in the season start going downhill, she may be the only reason why I stick around.
All in all, the episode was better than expected. It has been a difficult last couple of years with Grey’s Anatomy. One episode I love it and the other I absolutely despise it. I felt like in previous seasons (after season 4) the story lines kept getting repeated and the characters stopped developing. I hope that this season is truly a fresh start for everything because I have invested way too many years in this TV show.
Side note: I still have a problem with how they’re writing Dr. Bailey, I understand character development but this is NOT character development. They have somehow moved backwards with Dr. Bailey. Where is badass Dr. Bailey who doesn’t know how to give up? Where are her motivational speeches and her long stares that force you to agree to what ever she is asking you to do? Where is her confident walk? Yes, I know she eventually gave a badass speech in this episode, but she has lost that spark that made me fall in love with her in the beginning. Speaking of Dr. Bailey, can we talk about the camera work when she was in the O.R.? When she was giving her speech to be chief and the camera was going around the room; am I the only one that felt sick? I became dizzy and had to control the nausea it gave me. Just me?
