I write this as I’m drinking warm green tea and sucking on a cough drop, turns out that after a night of singing along with Allen Stone you will wake up without a voice the next day.
I have seen Allen Stone live 5 different times and somehow each time is better than the last. This time around I was lucky enough to attend his show at the House of Blues in Anaheim, California. With a set list that perfectly combined his older material with material from his latest album, this concert definitely made it into the top 5 best concerts I’ve ever been to.
You can’t go to an Allen Stone concert and not dance, so it was fitting that his first song was “Celebrate Tonight”. As soon as the lights went down and Allen Stone stepped on stage the energy in the room dramatically changed. No longer were people tired from standing, they were no longer irritated that strangers were invading their personal space, and they were no longer worried that this was a Sunday night and they had work the next morning; the only thing that mattered was that Allen Stone was on stage and they were about to dance the night away.
His flawless vocals accompanied by his charisma on stage make for an unforgettable concert. At the beginning of the show Allen Stone encourages the audience to put their phones away and be present in the moment. Though I did immediately put my phone in my purse, I’ll be honest, I ended up taking it back out a couple of times. I wanted pictures and video, I needed to remember the experience and I wanted to try to capture the magic. Truth be told, when I did put my phone away, that’s when I truly enjoyed the show; I danced, I shouted, I sang along (sorry people around me) and I had the time of my life. The show as a whole was phenomenal. Though the energy in the venue was upbeat, I should also say that never have I heard a crowd so silent than when the band left the stage and Allen Stone stood center stage with just his guitar and performed, “The Wire”. He captures an audience in an instant and during the song it almost felt like we were all collectively holding our breath.
The quiet moments on stage are treasured but the experience becomes other-worldly when the band, combined with Allen’s vocals create a magical experience. Throughout the show each member of the band has their moment to shine and BOY DO THEY SHINE! You can tell these group of men have come together because they truly enjoy what they’re doing and they seem to be right at home when they hit the stage.
Allen Stone not only creates an experience but he also creates an environment. He encourages audience participation, he goes into the crowd and ensures that you are aware he is having just a good a time as you are. He oozes positivity and captures attention that he holds on to for the entire show. He performs in a way that makes you aware that he is feeling every note that comes out of his mouth no matter if he is singing “Unaware” or “Million” or a cover of “Somebody That I Used To Know”.
I have gone to a lot of concerts; I saw Macklemore at the Staples Center and was lucky enough to attend the Eminem and Rihanna show at The Rose Bowl (front row) and I will say that Allen Stone’s audience can rival the large stadium crowds any day. The energy, the singing, the shouting, the dancing; I’m sitting here with no voice but my heart is full of energy and motivation. Not only do you have a blast at his shows but you leave Allen Stone’s concert feeling energized and inspired. You walk to your car with a sense that life just got so much better and I’m not just saying that; I really felt that feeling after all five shows of Allen Stone that I have attended.
I encourage you to go to one of his shows if he comes to a city near you. I promise you will not regret it. I have gone to five of his shows and I cannot wait for the sixth one to come along!
I’ve posted a couple of clips and pictures from the show on my INSTAGRAM, if you care to take a look you can find that HERE.
