Oscar nominations have been announced and the list of nominees were wonderful and disappointing all at the same time. I predicted correctly and Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Jennifer Lawrence and Eddie Redmayne were all nominated. Congratulations to all of the nominees, they are all deserving but … let the rant begin:
Why the lack of diversity? It used to be that there was a lack of roles for diverse actors and now what’s the excuse? The roles were there, the possibility for diversity within the nominations was very real and yet we find ourselves trending a topic like:
I want to make it very clear that I am not trying to take anything away from the people who were nominated because I do also believe that they are deserving. I just can’t help but wonder why Will Smith wasn’t nominated. What about the movie “Creed”? “Straight Outta Compton” as a whole was a cinematic masterpiece and a box office hit. O’Shea Jackson Jr. had one of the best performances of 2015 and yet he is no where to be found within the Oscar Nominations. Where’s Antoine Fuqua? While we’re at it, where is Southpaw? Actually lets not get into that because Southpaw was the best movie of 2015 and it got zero nominations! Idris Elba’s role in “Beasts of No Nation” was also missing from the nominations and everyone has noticed. Did the Academy Awards think they filled their quota for diversity by having Chris Rock host the show? All twenty of the acting nominees are white and this is a problem. I realize that we are making progress. It’s slow, snail-paced progress but I realize that it is happening. I just can’t help but be a little frustrated that so many note-worthy movies and actors have gone without acknowledgement. My question here is, should I save #Oscarssowhite as a spelling shortcut on my phone so I can use it again next year? Is this frustration something that I’ll have to get used to? Or will we finally start seeing a more diverse list of nominees in Awards shows?
I hope that this doesn’t discourage diverse artists and creators because the lack of recognition doesn’t take away from the fact that 2015 was a great year for film and you: Will Smith, Antoine Fuqua, Michael B. Jordan, O’Shea Jackson Jr. Idris Elba and so many more. You had everything to do with the fact that 2015 was a great year for film. I hope we continue to create because the fact that our diverse world wasn’t included in the Oscars Nominations of 2016, doesn’t mean we are not worthy of making a mark in this lifetime.
What are your thoughts? Are you at all surprised by any of the nominations?
