I don’t quite know where all my motivation has gone these last few weeks, but I keep finding myself with ample time to write yet zero ambition to do so. Everything feels like a bit too much and I find myself staring at my ceiling for way too long on any given day. Very little has brought me joy these last couple of weeks. That is, except for music, which is the number one thing that keeps coming through for me. So, I thought I would share the music that has been bring me joy lately.
Rina’s album, SAWAYAMA was released earlier this year and it’s been on the weekly rotation ever since. This is for the people who claim that Pop music is no longer good. Rina a gift and she deserves to be listened to. Her album contains a myriad of eccentric songs that will undoubtedly force you on your feet. Rina serves high production, amazing vocals and lyrics that will find themselves stuck in your head for days after. Play this album when you feel like having a dance party.
Have I ever told you how much I love Misterwives? Their music is the embodiment of joy. Even when some of their songs contain lyrics that are sad, they always find a way to make me feel joy. Their new song “Superbloom” feels like the breath of fresh air that I’ve been needing. Some of the lyrics include: “I deserve congratulations/’Cause I came out the other side/I’ve been having revelations/And I’m gon’ let them shine”. Play this song when you need a reminder that you’re stronger than you feel.
Residente, more often known for his rapping, has released the best love song of 2020. The song, which was created during this pandemic is titled “Antes Que El Mundo Se Acabe” (“Before The World Ends”) and it is a tender declaration of love. The music video features couples from all over the world (some celebrity couples included) kissing and maybe it’s a bit hard to watch if you’re isolating by yourself. This song is a delightful reminder of how sweet the world can be. Play this song when you want to feel like you’re falling in love.
Speaking of love songs; all due respect to Ms. Alicia Keys, but sometimes a song just hits a little different when performed by someone else. Jacob Banks has reimagined “Like You’ll Never See Me Again” and I find myself coming back to this song at least once a day. The production on this song makes it sound like a completely different tune and Jacob’s voice leads with an ache that threatens to break your heart. Play this song when you’re missing someone in particular.
Also known as the best album of 2019, Imagination & the Misfit Kid continues to be on rotation and I swear it keeps sounding better and better the more I play it. This album has a song for every mood and I promise that you’ll be better after you hear it. I listen to “Something’s Got To Give” when I need to dance the anxiety away. I listen to “Sexy MF” when I need a pick-me-up. I listen to “Mount Everest” when I need to remember that I’m a boss ass bitch. Play this album when you need to go on a journey.
Though I am always listening to (the perfect album) The Blessed Unrest by Sara Bareilles, I do find myself listening to her latest Amidst the Chaos more and more lately. Sara always knows the right things to say and that is especially true when it feels like the world is falling apart. The album is a series of reminders of the goodness in the world and will uplift your spirits immediately. Play this album when the world gets too much.
I know it’s hard to find the happy right now, but for your mental health, I urge you take a moment (or two or three) for yourself every couple of days. I know we’re all feeling the urgent need to save the world but I promise that you’ll be more able to do that if you give yourself time to breathe.
If you’re also finding happiness in music, send me new music to listen to!
