My favorite kind of Television shows are the ones that know how to utilize the power of music in each episode. Grey’s Anatomy, Sons of Anarchy and Scandal are all shows that have placed beautiful music during crucial scenes. I mean, I can’t listen to “Chasing Cars” without thinking of Denny dying in Grey’s Anatomy. Now there’s a new show that I can add to the list of TV shows that use music to add to powerful scenes: Jane The Virgin. (There will be another blog post that will be all Jane The Virgin appreciation but for now lets talk about the music.) I just finished binge-watching Jane The Virgin and I am officially obsessed. The song in particular I want to discuss is “Volcano” by Emily Hearn.
Talk about heartbreaking! I won’t spoil anything, because I really want you to watch this show, but the song came on during a terribly, sad scene. Through my tears I replayed the scene 4 more times because the “Volcano” was so beautiful and now I’m obsessed with Emily Hearn. The song is a heartbreaking ballad and you can hear the emotion behind Hearn’s vocals. The song describes how fragile love can be and it explains that even when we try to do everything right, things can still fall apart.
And sometimes love, love just ain’t enough
And sometime dreams, dreams just turn to dust
Sometimes love, love just ain’t enough
Songs that discuss love, heartbreak, and the ups and downs of relationships are everywhere and I can imagine that it would be difficult to try to bring a new perspective to the topic but Emily Hearn did just that. She sings her song with conviction and while listening to the song, you can’t help but to relate; because we’ve all unfortunately been there.
The beautiful thing about this song and the fact that I found it in a TV show is that the song doesn’t distract from the scene. If anything, the song adds to what is going on in the show. So this Music Monday I encourage you to look up Emily Hearn and to begin the binge-watching journey of Jane The Virgin. I promise you won’t regret either decision!
What have you been binge-watching lately?
