True story: The band NEEDTOBREATHE kept popping up on my recommended music in Spotify for the longest time but I continued to actively avoid them. Why? Well, because I had somehow convinced myself that NEEDTOBREATHE was Never Shout Never. Remember them? “I’m in trouble, I’m an addict. I’m addicted to this girl” … ring a bell? If ever I could provide an explanation as to how my brain works, now is not that time.
Needless to say, I eventually realized that NEEDTOBREATHE was a completely different entity to Never Shout Never and suddenly I’m playing all of their songs until my roommate asks me to please play anything else.
Think of NEEDTOBREATHE as a blend of the perfect amount of pop-rock, with the acoustic guitar coming in at just the right time, which includes tender vocals and lyrics that remind you why you’re alive.
I have made an art out of “starting over”; I’ve said all the best speeches, I’ve recreated my image (hello pink hair) enough times and I have presented a clean slate to the world more times than I can count. I contain a museum of past Julie’s and every version of me gets a little bit better with each try. Though said Julie museum has been missing one thing for some time, it’s been open to the general public for a while. However, I feel like I should warn that it tends to get a bit emotional within these four walls of the museum; you’ve been warned. I am proud to say that finally my museum has a permanent soundtrack that can play in a loop and the soundtrack kicks off with “Bridges Burn” off of the new NEEDTOBREATHE EP, Forever On Your Side.
I wanna watch all my bridges burn
Stand in the rain ’til the page is turned
Dance in the light of a lesson learned, lesson learned
I wanna leave everything that hurts
Never go back to the way we were
Set it on fire, baby, watch it burn, watch it burn
So picture this: you’re at the Julie museum, having the time of your life when suddenly you come across the Julie that falls in love (which really, should be happening any day now … because really there HAS to be an eligible bachelor/bachelorette for me out there … right?) and as the butterflies in your stomach begin to take flight you hear “Forever On Your Side” by NEEDTOBREATHE feat JOHNNYSWIM start playing.
All these pieces they fall in line
Because I’m forever on your side
Take my hand when you can’t see the light
‘Cause I’m forever on your side
I will carry you every time
‘Cause I’m forever on your side
The song feels powerful, the kind of powerful that makes you want to raise your hands and dance like nobody is watching. Not only have JOHNNYSWIM provided their magical harmonies but as the song picks up, I swear I can feel my heart dancing. Is that what falling in love feels like? … I’ll let you know if it ever happens on this side of The Universe.
Okay so maybe this album review and Julie museum analogy got away from me, but the point remains: NEEDTOBREATHE have created an EP worth listening to. “Bridges Burn” is the perfect pick-me-up while “Darling” serves as a tender love song, “Bullets” will definitely have you dancing in your seat while the title-track “Forever On Your Side” will have you excited to someday witness this band live. Speaking of which, they’re getting ready to go on a fall tour with a juliexplores.com favorite, JOHNNYSWIM and if anyone has some money I could borrow, I’ll be front row center at their show in Los Angeles.
My point is, and I have one I promise, NEEDTOBREATHE is out here making music worth replaying over and over again. At a time when the music industry feels jaded and bombarded with catchy choruses, this band is a breath of fresh air (and suddenly their name makes sense). So kick off your Monday right and take a break from the exhausting news while you listen to NEEDTOBREATHE for a much needed pick-me-up.
