As if you didn’t see enough social media posts about love yesterday, here I am bombarding you with some more love on this lovely Monday morning. I get it, there’s only so many roses and chocolate-covered strawberries that someone can take but please indulge me as I share six of my favorite love songs with you.
There’s just something about being loudly in love.
My life changed the moment that my eyes laid on Angel. We can say that my introduction to Rent the musical was the best thing that came out of my job at AMC Theatres. The entire show made a monumental impact on the heart that I permanently wore on my sleeve when I was a teenager. Specifically, there was something about the way that Angel and Tom Collins loved each other that took my breath away. They were joyful in public together and it’s the first time I can recall seeing that portrayed on screen. They only had each other and that was enough. The song they sing together, “I’ll Cover You” captures so much joy. Please someone dedicate this song to me.
Why mess with the classics? Look, if you’re going to look me in the eye and tell me that “This I Promise You” isn’t an iconic love song? Then I’d say you’re insane. Not only did this song prove that JC Chasez was always meant to be the lead in *NSYNC but it also sounds like the perfect vows for a wedding. What I’m saying is: fully expect to hear this at my future wedding.
There’s this line in Carlos Rivera’s “Como Pagarte?” that makes me weep! The line says, “I want to bring down the stars so that I could gift you one and it could shine your nights and your mornings”. References in songs or poetry to the stars and the moon will forever make the idea of love feel immensely monumental. The fact that you have to find something out of this world to describe your love is just about the most romantic thing I can think of.
Anyone else find themselves daydreaming about their wedding during 2nd period Algebra? Just me? Thanks to the iconic film Save the Last Dance, K-Ci & Jojo became the sound of love and heartbreak for about a year of my teenage existence. As soon as I discovered it, I knew that their song “This Very Moment” would be the song I would walk down the aisle to and that sentiment hasn’t changed. No groom in sight but the playlist is coming along just fine.

I don’t think Chayanne will ever top his song “Me Enamore De Ti”. He can try … he has tried but the romantic love song is the most iconic thing to come out of him since “Tiempo De Vals”. “Me Enamore De Ti” captures that initial high you get when you feel like you’re falling in love. The song is full of yearning in a sweet and romantic way without teetering into the obsessive. Plus, Chayanne’s voice is perfect for falling in love.

It wouldn’t be a list of music I enjoy, without including my favorite couple Johnnyswim. Masters at songwriting, of course they found a way to describe two complicated and flawed humans falling in love. Their song “Falling For Me” is about the possibilities; maybe you end up together and maybe you don’t but it was beautiful while it lasted. This song is one of my favorites because it describes the complexities of falling in love with a flawed person with so much tenderness that it makes you ache to find someone to connect with.
When I first heard Sara Bareilles’ “Cassiopeia” I had to pause it before it was over, my emotions quickly got the best of me. People consider me to be a picky dater and maybe I am, but I was always unable to describe what exactly I was looking for. Then I heard this song and my every feeling was perfectly captured. I remember listening to Sara describe this song and saying (I’m paraphrasing here) that a friend gifted her a book of constellations and in that book she found out that in order for stars to become constellations they have to collide. This is what this song is all about, willing to risk it all in order to feel love. Is that not the most beautiful sentiment?

Quick someone fall in love with me.
Tell me some of your favorite love songs so that I can add them to my rotation.
