We are taught, at a very young age, that in order to survive you must be in constant competition with the other women around you. Someone will always be prettier, tougher, smarter, louder than you so you must always try to beat her. This idealistic way of thinking is shoved down our throats through movies, television, music and society. It’s the sad reality of being a woman in this world. Since this is the reality I have struggled to hold close girl friendships all of my life. Maybe these are my own insecurities, maybe it’s them but maybe, possibly it’s that it’s all of us. For a moment in time I had convinced myself that I didn’t need to have strong friendships with girls, the boys in my life were just as good, if not better. I’ve slowly come to realize that I was oh-so-wrong! Having strong friendships with women is vital for survival. I am a believer in GIRL POWER. I’ve recently surrounded myself more and more with the women in my life (I’m looking at you Harim) and I am the happiest that I’ve ever been.
So I am here to share a secret with you … come close …
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE IN COMPETITION WITH OTHER WOMEN!
I know! It’s a shocking revelation, but I promise that I am telling you the truth. The actual reality is that there will always be someone who’s better, prettier, smarter, tougher and braver than you. The thing is, if you decide to support these other women instead of bringing them down then you too can be smarter, braver, prettier, and tougher! I know it’s a ridiculous thought … women supporting other women but I’ve seen it happen! The best example I can give you of this is: I’ve recently joined a Facebook group and it’s (over) 30,000 women discussing travel, encouraging travel, encouraging independence, encouraging adventure and it’s a beautiful thing to be a part of. I mean sure, now and then arguments may arise when discussing certain topics (just think there are 30,000 women from all over the world who all have their own thoughts and opinions about certain subjects, so we can’t agree on everything) but it’s (for the most part) handled in a very civilized way and at the end of the day we all come together for our common love for traveling.
The Facebook group is called GIRLS LOVE TRAVEL and it contains all of the Girl Power I could have ever asked for. So this MUSIC MONDAY I want to dedicate a special song to this group. The song is Lady Marmalade, the specific version I want to dedicate is the one with Christina Aguilera, Lil’Kim, Mya, Pink feat Missy Elliott. Why this song? Umm because it’s the best song to start your week with but also because this song stands for everything the Facebook group stands for. The song was a collaboration between five very powerful women in the music industry who came together to recreate this classic song. Think about the time when this song came out, in the early 2000’s all of these women were constantly pinned against each other by the media (especially Pink and Christina). I mean, I have no idea if there was an actual rivalry between any of them but I do know that all differences were put aside to create this epic song and for that I thank them.
So ladies (from Girls Love Travel) if you somehow made it to this post I thank you. Thank you for always being supportive, thank you for your words of encouragement, thank you for your suggestions, thank you for advice and thank you for sharing your own adventures. I hope you listen to this song and start your week with the best solo dance party there ever was.
