The new Jason Mraz album has officially dropped and Know contains every fuzzy and magical feeling you can think of. If Mr. A-Z is good at something, that thing is making people feel good and this latest album proves just that. This collection of love letters has every single good vibe you could possibly need for these difficult times.
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t a huge fan of Jason’s last release. His Yes album, which was a collaboration with Raining Jane, was a bit too mellow for my taste; I kept wishing for his return to his original sound. While fully aware that artists grow and change constantly, I felt it necessary for Jason to return to his roots and he has finally delivered.
The moment I heard his lead single, “Have It All”, I knew I would fall in love with this new album. “Lets See What The Night Can Do” kicks off the album in a tender way and the theme of love carries through the entirety of the 10 songs. “Making It Up” is the needed motivation that Jason Mraz is so wonderful at providing. Though my favorite song may just be “Sleeping to Dream” which is a song that Jason has been performing at his live shows for years and am so happy to see he has finally immortalized it on this album.
If I could share one complaint: the duet.
Look, this may be the grudge I am holding on to talking but, the Meghan Trainor collaboration on “More Than Friends” feels … forced. Maybe I don’t know Meghan’s work as well, maybe I’m still upset that she won the Grammy for Best New Artist over James Bay and Tori Kelly, maybe I can’t seem to get the chorus to “All About That Bass” out of my head; the point is this collaboration doesn’t make sense to me. I’ve listened to the song a total of three times and it just doesn’t feel genuine. It feels as if the song could’ve made a better impact if he had added a voice like Sara Bareilles on it.
As a whole, Know is a wonderful listening experience. It feels completely appropriate that Jason named the tour “Good Vibes” because it is exactly what this album provides. So do yourself a favor and kick off the week with this collection of wonderful songs. xx
