Let’s kick off this week with a dash of confidence and a solo-slow-dance in your car.
Janelle Monáe is set to release her third LP, Dirty Computer, on April 27th and if her recent three single releases are any indication of what’s to come; I think it’s safe to say that none of us are ready. While I admit that I am absolutely new to the wonder that is Janelle Monáe, I have found myself obsessing over everything she has recently released and now I need you all to listen to her.
Her music exudes confidence, sensuality and assurance of what she represents; she is the kind of woman I want to be when I grow up. I say this as a woman who is the most confident she’s ever been (FINALLY, at the age of 28), while aware that 14-year-old Julie still resides in the most broken pieces of my heart but the truth is that Janelle’s music forces a fun and self-confident dance out of me.
Admittedly, out of the three recent singles, “Make Me Feel” is my favorite and I replay it every chance I get. However, it’s “I Like That” that reminds me of my self-worth and of the need to be confident in everything I do.
A little crazy, little sexy, little cool
Little rough around the edges but I keep it smooth
I’m always left of center and that’s right where I belong
I’m the random minor note you hear in major songs
Janelle and her music has caught me by surprising, but she’s slowly becoming one of my favorite artists. I dare you to listen to “I Like That” and not feel a bit more confident about your Monday.
