As if 2016 wasn’t weird enough; we were recently hit with a collaboration that I never saw coming. Taylor Swift and Zayn Malik, formerly from One Direction, have come together for a song that will be featured in the Fifty Shades Darker Soundtrack. This isn’t about the terrible movie though, this is about this song that turned into a confusing journey of self-reflection and a constant questioning of “What is R&B?”
Full disclosure: It took me about 15 replays to finally get into the song. This is a song that was meant for Zayn’s voice but the introduction of Taylor’s voice towards the middle of the song sounded out of place, at first. Their voices didn’t seem to effortlessly blend, it sounded forced and calculated which ruined the listening experience for me.
HOWEVER, it’s been a good 40 replays since then and the song is finally growing on me. It may have been that the collaboration seemed odd, so I struggled to find the music genuine but I did eventually find myself enjoying the song. The only problem that I still have is that people keep referring to the song as R&B and I just don’t hear that when listening to this song (or anything else Zayn has created). This song is Pop to me and though rumors have been circulating that Taylor may want to experiment with R&B I struggle to see a music world where Taylor Swift is creating genuine R&B music. Though I am a fairly big fan of Tay-Tay, the truth of the matter is; her music is over-produced and “radio hit” driven, her talent seems better qualified for the Pop world.
All in all, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” is worth a listen and though I’m not a fan of the movie it’s promoting, it does seem to fit the theme perfectly. This collaboration seemed completely odd at first but eventually I found it working out. What odd collaborations would you like to see in the future?
