I wouldn’t call myself pretentious when it comes to music, though others may disagree. I analyze music but not in a technical way, I try to find the feeling in everything and that might be where I struggled with Ariana Grande.
I have a complicated relationship with Ariana Grande and her music. She clearly seems like the kind of pop star that would be right up my ally. Yet I found myself struggling connect with her music. I get it, “how much can one actually connect with a song like ‘Side to Side’?” The thing is, I struggled to connect to her more emotional music as well. There is no denying that she is vocally talented but alas, I avoided her music.
Then came “Thank U, Next” and suddenly I found the magic that everyone saw in her. The song was refreshing and empowering all while having the perfect pop song chorus. The album was released this past week and then I found the heart in “ghostin”.
I know you hear me when I cry
I try to hold it in at night
While you’re sleepin’ next to me
But it’s your arms that I need this time (This time)
Look at the cards that we’ve been dealt
If you were anybody else
Probably wouldn’t last a day
Heavy tears, a rain parade from hell (From hell)
I don’t think anyone would argue the fact that Ariana has had an extremely difficult year and we have all been witness to how gracefully she has handled it all. This song looks like a glimpse into her heartache and her vulnerability in the lyrics is paired perfectly with a simple instrumental. I wouldn’t necessarily call myself a Stan but I respect Ariana a little bit more now.
I mean, I would love it if she stopped using other’s culture as an aesthetic BUT you wins some, you lose some. The point is, she has surrounded herself with the perfect group of hit makers. The entirety of her latest album release feels heavy with feeling wrapped to the tone of the perfect pop songs and it’s been on constant repeat since Friday.
nSo do yourself a favor and kick off your Monday with an album that will motivate, empower and make you fee and make you dance all at once.
