This post was supposed to go up for Music Monday, but we went too hard at Sunday Funday and I spent most of yesterday recovering. So here we are, attempting to get it together enough to share my new favorite song with you all.
I’m ashamed to admit that Snow Tha Product has only been on my radar for a couple of years. It was Lin-Manuel Miranda and “Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)” that first brought her music to me; now I consume her music every chance I get.
Her latest song feels like a life lesson that needs to be learned by anyone entering the dating world.
Every bitch you fuck with either crazy or amazing
Then you shady as can fuckin’ be
You can’t commit and that’s your greatest talent
Claim you’re breaking hearts like back to back
Deep inside there’s somethin’ less than average
The first boy that I “loved” cheated on me; at 16 years old I was convinced that I was in love with this guy who continued to manipulate me into submission. The first time he cheated he broke me and every time I took him back, was a losing battle with my self-esteem. He knew all the ways to convince me that I was going crazy to doubt him. It took me years to recover from “my first love”.
If 18-year-old Julie (the age I was when I found the strength to walk away) had heard “Gaslight” by Snow Tha Product, I’m sure she would’ve appreciated every single word.
Life feels a tiny bit more bearable when you realize just how often other people go through the same things as you. You can breathe a little easier when you remember how many times people have gotten through the same thing. That’s why I love music; music is a series of life lessons wrapped into a sweet melody and a catchy chorus.
And you could tell me lies
Tell me, tell me lies
Tell me I’m trippin’
Tell me why, tell me I’m the one
Then rewind to a gaslight pro (pro)
It baffles me how Snow Tha Product is not commonly in the list of best female rappers; her flow in English AND Spanish is effortless, her diverse and eclectic sound make every single one of her songs unique and her lyrics always find their way to the most vulnerable truth. “Gaslight” deserves to be replayed until you know every single word and I’ll be singing it to my niece until she memorizes the signs of a manipulative person.
I’ve been just your type
Prey on any insecurity you fucking find
Got me questionin’ my memory
You’re a narcissist, intensity
You startin’ off the problem, causin’ drama
Then you got me second guessin’ me
