I first heard her voice on a Macklemore song. She caught me off guard but I was immediately looking up the rest of her work on all streaming services: I found two songs. I was disappointed, but I was already invested. So I patiently waited for a complete body of work and it has finally arrived. Donna Missal has released her debut album and This Time is everything that I wish it would be plus so much more.
It’s her vocals that force you to pay attention and the first track, “Girl”, catches the entirety of your attention by the first 15 seconds. The song describes tension between two girls, in this song she’s asking the other girl to let go of what ever grudge she has and instantly Donna Missal is relatable.
Thinking I did something wrong
But I wouldn’t choose this
When women hate on another women
Everybody loses, yeah, hey
I mean, play this at any High School the the student-body will immediately understand this song. This song is so much more than describing a disagreement between two girls though; it’s female empowerment captured amongst the electric vocals.
The powerhouse vocals continue in songs like “Driving”, “Metal Man” and “Test My Patience”; though it’s in the heartbreak that she truly excels. “Keep Lying” has been my favorite song since its release as a single and as I listened to This Time in order, I found that stumbling into “Keep Lying” in the middle of this passionate album gave new life to an already-exemplary song. The grit and passion in her voice steal the entire show but the heartbreak in the lyrics sneak into your heart before you can catch your breath.
Feed me your fiction
Give me just one taste
To sustain this addiction
I swallow your poison
‘Til it runs through my veins
Fills my heart with deception
Twist my perception
She ends the album with “Don’t Say Goodnight” and she leaves her listener wishing the album had ten more song after it. She pleads in this song, the jazz comes through in a perfect matter and the vocals make your heart ache. There is no denying that she has put her blood, sweat and tears into this album and it has been completely worth it.
Donna feels like magic; a sultry voice, a soulful production and she has the lyrical capacity to undo your entire being with one song. She did not hold back for her debut and the payoff is incredible. She created a piece of art that will stand the test of time and if my 10 replays in the last 4 days is any indication of the album’s power; I’m here to say Ms. Missal hit it out of the park with This Time.
