So this Music Monday is coming at you a little later than usual, which mainly is because I wasn’t going to post anything today BUT I cannot get this song out of my head.
I have been obsessed with Jessie Reyez since her song “Figures” first came into my life. She recently released a remix to her single “Body Count” which includes Kehlani and Normani, which may be the best song of 2018. I SAID WHAT I SAID.
This song gives me Christina Aguilera feat. Lil’ Kim “Can’t Hold Us Down” vibes. It is female empowerment wrapped into a solid pop song.
You don’t gotta tell me ’bout your body count
I don’t gotta know your ex’s name
‘Cause if it just so happens that you turn around and ask me
I think you might feel some type of way
I dodge dick on the daily
My relationship with my sexuality is a complicated one, it could be correlated to the sexual assault I’ve endured but that’s just a guess because my therapist and I haven’t gotten to those issues yet. As I’ve gotten older I have learned to own my body and the right I have to be as free as I can be, unfortunately the world has yet to catch up. Though progress has been made, we live in a world that constantly slut-shames and does not miss an opportunity to victim blame. So consider me ecstatic to listen to this song that celebrates a healthy sexual life for a female and acknowledges the beauty of being bisexual, while bringing three beautiful women together.
This song is everything I need to live my best life.
I dodge dick for some pussy, something that we can agree on
Don’t tell me it’s a turn on for you, or maybe it bothers you
That you’re the only one out the equation
Jessie Reyez is a powerful vocalist and bringing on Kehlani and Normani was the absolute best decision she could’ve made for this song. So do yourself a favor and put this song on repeat.
