2016 has been a rough, chaotic and heartbreaking year. So many world tragedies and the answers we so desperately need are nowhere to be found. This past week has been confusing, sad, chaotic and I find myself constantly crying for people who didn’t deserve to die. I don’t have the answers and I don’t know how to fix things but I find that music usually makes it better. Even if just for a few minutes, I believe that the right kind of music can completely turn your mood around.
On Friday Jennifer Lopez and Lin-Manuel Miranda released a collaboration titled “Love Make The World Go Round”.
This is the Pop anthem that the world needs, this song is the reason why at 10 years old I fell in love with Pop music. It is a happy, up-beat, declaration of love and happiness. Jlo and Lin-Manuel’s voices fit together perfectly and the song is full of emotion. The song begins with an excerpt from Lin’s acceptance speech at the Tony’s and the song closes with another excerpt from the same speech.
Those who hate us and fear us, can not keep us down
Cause we hear in our heartbeat a beautiful sound
If they try to deny us or silence us now
We just say no, oh, yeah, we let ’em know
We need more of this. Yes, the events of the last couple of days have been truly heartbreaking and I don’t want to take anything away from the importance of fighting to be heard or the need to bring attention to the lives that continue to be unjustly taken. My point here is that we cannot allow fear to win. I know this is easier said than done but if you look around, truly look around (put your phone down and make eye contact with a stranger), you will see that love is out there.
On another, semi-related, note: today Lin-Manuel Miranda is playing Hamilton for the last time on Broadway and I am feeling a lot. He is a beautiful gift to this world and I am so happy to exist in the same lifetime as him.
What we got is love even when the sinners hate us
We can not let ’em diminish or intimidate us
We sing out, we got the rhythm and the truth on our side
We cut through the divide and we do it with pride
I urge you to go and buy this song, not only I am guaranteeing that it will lift your spirits but all proceeds from the song will go to the Hispanic Federation’s Proyecto Somos Orlando organization. According to the website, Proyecto Somos Orlando will “address the long-term needs for mental health services that are culturally competent and bilingual,” as well as “enable care to be delivered to those affected directly in the communities in which they live.”
