As we all emotionally prepare for Season 2 of Mayans MC, Kurt Sutter has hit us with some news. If picked up for a third season, Kurt Sutter plans to take a step back from his creator role and allow his co-creator Elgin James to take control of the story. He’ll continue to be involved with the show as a Producer but the story will be led by Elgin James. In a speech he gave at the Hollywood premiere of Mayans MC he said,
“I’ll still be involved in a producorial capacity, but I’m really clear that for this show to establish its own unique mythology, one that I believe can be more potent and relevant than Sons, it has to be guided by a fresh voice. A voice of color, a voice that is still haunted by the struggle. And that voice belongs to Elgin James.”
When I heard about this announcement, I was surprised and (admittedly) a bit scared for the future of the show. I feel passionate about Kurt Sutter’s brilliance in running a show but after reading his statement, I felt reassured that Kurt did this for the betterment of the show.
Not only is this a great way to allow an under-represented voice to represent themselves, but the fanbase that followed Mayans MC from Sons of Anarchy seem to be struggling to let go of the Sons of Anarchy mythology. They compare characters, they compare ACTORS, they compare storylines and truthfully it’s infuriating. Mayans MC was always described as being part of the Sons world but to compare the shows feels unfair to the creators and writers of each respective show … but that seems like a rant for another day.
In terms of representation: this is how you do proper representation in television for the LATINX community. Kurt Sutter allowed his successful voice to spearhead a television show that contained a mostly-LATINX cast. He then allowed the show to flourish and stepped back once the show and his co-creator had established themselves. This is the proper way to open doors.
I’d love to believe in a fairytale world where LATINX talent can bust down doors on their own, but unfortunately the way that Hollywood is set up: we’re going to need allies. (Not to say that we don’t help each other out because America Ferrera, Eva Longoria and Salma Hayek are pure examples that we do.) We will need allies like Ellen Pompeo, people who don’t speak for us but who give us a safe space to speak for ourselves. Kurt Sutter is a perfect example of what needs to happen for Hollywood to be able to move in the right direction.
I just hope that this announcement doesn’t give FX reason to cancel Mayans MC. Here’s hoping that FX has as much faith in the show and its creator, Elgin James, as Kurt Sutter does. Mayans MC Season 2 premieres September 3rd.
