I’ve been holding off on writing a review on this album because I fear it may just end up sounding like a fan girl obsessing about this new ” totally awesome” band that she discovered. Well, I couldn’t keep this album from you guys any longer because you guys deserve wonderful music and Kaleo is wonderful music. This four-piece band from Iceland is starting to make waves in the U.S. and with the kind of music they are creating, we’re definitely welcoming them with open arms.
This is the perfect debut album; it’s eclectic in it’s sound, it showcases influences from different music backgrounds and the vocals are perfection. They open up the album with an energetic, blues-inspired track. “No Good” begins with a soulful, blues-filled guitar riff and it keeps the momentum up throughout the rest of the song. This is a song will definitely exceed any and all expectations when being performed live, the studio version is phenomenal but I can’t wait to experience this live (on October 30th). The transition into the next song isn’t seamless, “Way Down We Go” is an immediate change in tone. However, you quickly forget the odd transition as soon as the first set of vocals hit your ear. Band leader JJ Julius Son delivers some raspy, soulful and heartbreaking notes that completely capture your attention.
Kaleo gives us a hint of country with “Automobile” while “Broken Bones” is a foot-stomping, blues-filled, road-tripping kind of tune. Another song that I can’t wait to listen to live is “Glass House”, the track is heavier on the drum side and they captured the energy in a way that makes you want to have a solo dance party in your car. The album closes with “I Can’t Go On Without You” which is one of the slower tracks and is the perfect way to end the musical journey.
I’ll say it again: this is the perfect debut album. Though the journey isn’t completely smooth, it still perfectly showcases the band’s magic while giving you just enough to keep you wanting more. Kaleo recently announced their Fall tour and I’ve (obviously) already bought my ticket. I cannot wait to see these guys live! Go to their page and see if they’re coming to a city near you: HERE
Now go and listen to their album, then come back and tell me how much you absolutely loved it.
