Pride month has truly outdone itself this year.
As we near the end of June, I find it necessary to share this new inspiring song from the magical Joy Oladokun. I discovered Joy a few years ago and I have allowed her music to walk me through my complicated and often frustrating emotions. So it’s not surprise that her new song “Sunday” quickly made its way into my heart.
“Sunday” is an exploration of guilt over one’s own identity. “Sunday” feels like the anthem that June so desperately needed. “Sunday” exists because Joy allowed her vulnerability to take center stage.
The lyrics are heavy; they follow Joy struggling with her guilt over her sexuality. They describe the inner turmoil of someone who is trying to reconcile their religion with their sexual identity. Just a few years ago Joy was a worship leader. Though she found it difficult to leave the church and begin her journey towards self-acceptance she took the plunge and I think we’re all so much better for it, The beauty in Joy’s music is that her words intricately describe her pain while the music behind the words carry the triumph in that she’s discovered in her life.
Joy released a music video to accompany the release of the single and to see the song visually play out feels like the perfect gift that she could’ve given the world. The music video showcases pure queer love at its absolute finest and feels like the perfect thing to watch over and over for the rest of the month.
