Anyone else starting to feel a bit restless?
Remember the times when I would proudly proclaim that I was an introvert? You’d think I’d be having the time of my damn life right now. Yet, I find the days getting longer and the restlessness has me planning an escape from this place I call my home. However, I’ve found a thing to look forward to in the week. Which is important because really, I’m going crazy over here.
At a time when so any musicians are postponing their musical projects (I’m looking at you Lady Gaga & HAIM) my favorite duo, Johnnyswim, has found an innovative way to create music and connect with their fans. For the past four weeks, Johnnyswim has gone on Instagram Live and picked a complete and random stranger to write a song with. When this started, their goal was to get on Instagram Live at noon, pick a stranger, write a song and have the finished product up on Soundcloud by midnight. I know that the idea sounds … chaotic at best but I have watched the progress every single week and it just works.
If you’ve read any of my previous work on Johnnyswim (here, here and here) then you know just how highly I think of their musical creations. Though watching their process on Instagram Live feels like an entire privilege all on its own. You get to see them write lyrics, create the music, record the vocals, master the track and you get to listen to the finished product by the end of the day. Honestly, it’s the best kind of distraction when you feel like your brain might explode from all the news.
They have created four songs so far and every single one them feels like they exist in their own world. Though Abner admits to having nerves about actually being able to do this once a week. I, a dedicated and casually-obsessed fan, knew better. Johnnyswim has always led with love and that is evident in their previous work so there’s no surprise that they’ve stumbled upon absolute magic with each of these four songs.
More than finding someone to write a song with, Johnnyswim is clearly finding new ways to connect and it’s working. Not only are Amanda and Abner connecting with the stranger but being a witness to the process feels like being part of an exclusive club that radiates joy on a weekly basis. It’s truly wonderful to see the way Abner carefully gets a story out of each stranger. It feels awe-inspiring to witness Amanda’s creative process.
Their goal? To have an entire album ready by the time this is over. Though each song made it to Soundcloud first, they’re now all on every music streaming platforms. Not only that, but all revenue coming from the songs will be going to individual charities and if that doesn’t make this the perfect project then I don’t know what does.
Anyway, for anyone who feels like the days are getting longer and like the restlessness may just win in the end; I strongly urge you to follow along every week. I promise you’re going to want to say you were there when, in the future, everyone is reveling about the fact that Johnnyswim saved 2020.
