This morning I heard the news that some coward hacked Leslie Jones’ phone and her website. This sorry excuse of a human being posted stolen, intimate pictures of Leslie Jones on the front page of her website. Not only did he post those pictures but he also posted a video of Harambe on the front page of her website. (Please tell me that racism doesn’t exist anymore… I dare you!)
I am disgusted. I am angry. I am heartbroken. My heart aches for this woman. My mind finds it difficult to understand where all this hate for her came from; this woman who only wants to make people laugh. So she said something you disagree with? So you don’t find her funny? Her attackers have been persistent in their aim to bring the comedienne down; they constantly attack her on twitter. At one point the hate got so bad that it caused her to disconnect from social media for a few days.
I want to scream. I want to grab whoever did this and knock some sense into them. I don’t care what your feelings towards Leslie Jones are, THIS IS NOT OKAY. I want to believe that this is an isolated incident. I want to believe that it was this was one person who got upset at this one actress. Unfortunately one scroll through Twitter and it becomes fairly obvious that misogyny and racism still completely exist. This is not an isolated incident and actress or not, this is something EVERY woman should be speaking up about.
In regards to the intimate pictures, this is the argument that was made multiple times to me today “But why does she have those pictures on her phone?” To that I say (what my friend Candice said):
“Why do you buy things if you don’t want them stolen?”
This is what it has come to? A woman can’t take pictures of herself for fear that some tech-savy loser may hack and release the pictures. I should be able to do whatever the hell I want on the phone I bought with MY MONEY. I should also be able to do whatever I want with my body who is nobody else’s but MY OWN. If I want to photograph myself NAKED while I “put my thing down, flip it and reverse it” then that is my right. If I want to keep those pictures on my phone to send to a partner, to show my friends or to look at when my self-esteem is down then that is MY RIGHT.
If you read what happened to Leslie Jones and thought something in the realm of “but why does she have those pictures on her phone?” Well, I welcome you to VICTIM BLAMING 101.
This is not Leslie Jones’ fault.
It is disgusting to see that some people cannot stand that this beautiful black woman is making every single one of her dreams come true. She is making people laugh and her magic clearly threatens the angry white man who has ruled the world for a very long time. So, while you sit behind your keyboard thinking of the next vile thing you’ll be tweeting at her, she’ll be making millions and smiling from ear to ear.
I stand with Leslie Jones. I will support any and every project she has a part in. I will give her my money, my laughter and my appreciation. I will continue to speak up against trolls who feel threatened by a strong female. I will use my voice for to change the world.
