For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been considering the idea of featuring Latin artists on this site and I finally made the decision. I knew that the first artist I would want to discuss would be Mon Laferte; I accidentally stumbled upon this artist when she somehow ended up in one of my playlists months ago. Yet, it wasn’t until weeks later that I actually listened to one of her songs. The song? “Tu Falta De Querer”. It’s been an obsessive, one-sided love affair since that moment. I watched every video on Youtube of her that I could find, I told my friends about her (even the ones that don’t speak Spanish) and I let her music heal my soul.
Mon Laferte is from Chile but got her “big break” in Mexico and when I say “big break” I mean she worked her ass off until someone was smart enough to sign her. She’s had incredible success in Latin America and this past week she was in Los Angeles doing a bit of promotion for her album: Mon Laferte Vol. 1.
On Wednesday, July 13 I was lucky enough to attend a private Mon Laferte acoustic show. The show was put together by the radio station 107.1 Super Estrella
Her humble spirit radiates out of her as soon as she steps foot on the stage. She began the night by thanking the radio station for putting the event together as well as the few fans that got invited and the press who was present. This is the kind of artist I love supporting; full of talent and forever grateful, she deserves every ounce of success she gets. When introducing her newest album she explains that it came about after someone broke her heart: “Yo escribi este ultimo album porque me rompien el corazon.” While listening to it, it’s clear that Mon Laferte Vol. 1 is an album about healing. Her music has a way of helping you put all your broken pieces back together, it takes you on a ride that is painful, beautiful and much needed.
Mon Laferte is unapologetic when describing the journey that she took in creating the musical masterpiece that is Mon Laferte Vol. 1. When introducing her song Amor Completo she describes that the song was born from the fact that when she got her heart broken she was extremely sad. She then decided to stop living in the sadness and she went out and found love, or a few loves. (This anecdote reminds me of Season 2 Meredith Grey “You don’t get to call me a whore” … anyone else?) So Mon found love and it was an intense, short-lived kind of love, so Amor Completo was born. “La cosa es que me rompieron el corazon y este pues yo andaba muy triste por la vida. Pero, estaba tan triste pero tampoco soy tan masoquista entonces dije ‘bueno como me sano el corazon? Como me quito estra tristesa? Pues con otro amor dije. Bueno, oh con varios. Entonces me enamore este, un amor fugaz. Que duro como dos semanas pero fue intenso, son buenos esos amores que duran poquito. Mejor no? Porque asi uno vive la parte bonita. Y bueno, hice esta cancion para esta persona que fue un amor muy intenso y muy cortito.”
Her stage presence is that of someone who is still surprised that people show up to her gigs. She admitted to being nervous, she likened it to the beginning of a relationship. Those moments when it’s all exciting and you want to impress the other person. “No se estoy como muy emocionada. Siento que, venia platicando en el camino, que en verdad ciento como empezar de zero. Venir a cantar aca para ustedes. No se, como conquistar a un novia nuevo, como algo asi. Y no voy a mentir, tengo mucha ilusion.” The nerves seem to disappear the moment she hits the first notes of a song. Her voice is full of passion and emotion, it can put you back together and break your heart within the span of just a couple of minutes. I found myself forgetting that I was in a room full of strangers and I was on the verge of tears during (my favorite song) “Tu Falta De Querer”.
The beauty of Mon Laferte is that her music doesn’t perfectly fit into one category. Her music is a little bit of everything powered by strong vocals that will demand you to feel. The night was pure magic and Mon Laferte is a majestic Unicorn when she steps onto a stage. I don’t care if you don’t speak Spanish, I need you to go out of your way and listen to her music. I need you to support her talent, I need you to buy tickets to her concerts in California in November, I need you to tell your friends about her. This is the kind of music that should spread like wildfire. This is the kind of artist that young girls should be looking up to.
Go to her Facebook page and find her tour information, because this is an artist who is worth seeing LIVE. TRUST ME, have I ever been wrong when it comes to my artist recommendations? Her FACEBOOK PAGE
