I was a Stan before that word even existed.
When I was younger I absolutely idolized Britney Spears; I wanted to dress like her, I tried to dance like her and I consumed her content every single hour that I was awake. As I grew up, my obsession subsided but my love absolutely remained. I have followed Britney’s journey through the historic ups and the dangerous lows. Just as I thought that the ride had slowed down, the coaster throws me on a loop.
A couple of months ago Britney cancelled her upcoming Vegas Residency, Domination. She sighted that it was due to her father’s health and then we didn’t hear from her for a weeks until it was reported that she had checked herself into a mental health facility. I mean, Britney’s mental health struggles, have been well-documented so it didn’t come as much as a surprise.
Cut to, April 16th, when a voicemail was left for the podcast Britney’s Gram. The person who left the voicemail claimed that Britney was being held against her will in the mental health facility. Once the episode was released, things got a bit out of hand (some would say).
The hashtag #FreeBritney officially went viral, fans began reaching out to Britney’s family and friends, a protest was held in West Hollywood demanding Britney’s release from the mental health facility and theories about what is really going on have continued to flood the internet.
My thoughts on this are the following: not to sound too Chris Crocker but for the love of God, leave Britney alone.
Britney Spears has had a history of mental health issues and we have all been a witness to them. This stay at a mental health facility is not her first and though she has retrieved from the public eye in recent years, she has never faltered in her outspoken nature when absolutely needed. The truth is, there is no way to be absolutely certain that the allegations of her being held against her will are true. I truly hope that she is taking care of herself and that the decisions being made in regards to her well-being are being made by her and only her.
Look, I completely understand how things got out of hand so quickly. The public listened to this voicemail and heard the girls on the podcast theorizing how possible it is that Britney is being held against her will and everyone freaked out. The thing is though, all of this public speculation and clear invasion of privacy cannot be good for her.
The thing that frustrates me the most is the fact that the fans have gone as far as to reach out to Sam Lufti. SAM MOTHERFUCKING LUFTI. The man who used and abused Britney during the most chaotic years of her life. The man who attempted to get a pay-day out of Britney any chance he got. Why would anybody reach out to him in regards to Britney’s WELL-BEING?? Consider me absolutely frustrated.
Earlier today Britney posted an Instagram video where she informed her fans that she was okay and that they needed to stop worrying about her. I mean, I’ve already seen people explaining how staged the video looks so clearly there is no end in sight to all of this.
So my main point: until we get real proof that Britney Spears is being controlled and held against her will, I will remain calm. I will continue to support her every move and her music will continue to make me happy but I will absolutely not partake in the actions of some of the fanbase. I will not be adding to her stress and I hope that other people choose to take a step back.
What are your thoughts on this #FreeBritney situation? I promise to not judge any of the theories.
