I feel extremely confident when saying that Lin-Manuel Miranda is a genius. While I’m completely aware that if he heard me calling him that, he’d probably disagree with me but I need it to be known that this is how I feel.
Earlier this week Lin Hamildropped a new, re-imagined version of “Burn” from Hamilton. Originally the song is performed by Eliza in the show and it comes right after Alexander Hamilton makes the decision to publish the letters that exposed his affair to the world. “Burn” is a beautiful and dedicated song as it describes the heartbreak that one feels when being betrayed by the person you love the most.
For “First Burn” Lin-Manuel brought together the five actresses currently playing Eliza and this soulful rendition of the song has been in my ear for an entire week.
“First Burn” is the first draft of the song, it’s what Lin first wrote down when he was feeling via Eliza and if the final draft was heartbreaking in its strength, the first draft is painfully and necessary in its anger.
I’m still obsessing over these lyrics:
Your enemy whispers
So you have to scream
I know about whispers
I see how you look at my sister
The genius in Lin-Manuel comes in the layers of his writing, his character are developed and you will always find new discoveries about the people he creates.
I have been meaning to write about “First Burn” all week long but I felt like I wouldn’t be able to do the song and its power justice so it took me all week to come up with these words to try to convince you to listen to the song. “First Burn” helps you find the strength in the heartbreak and the powerful vocals make for an emotional experience while listening to the song.
