I’m not quite sure why it took me until it was streaming on Amazon Prime to watch Late Night but I just spent the last two hours falling in love with the movie.
Mindy Kaling has proved to be a force to be reckoned with in the world of comedies and her movie Late Night, which stars the absolutely-stylish Emma Thompson, is just a reminder of that. The film follows Katherine Newbury (Emma Thompson), host of the late night talk show Tonight. The storyline follows along as Katherine finds out that she will soon be replaced as host of her show. In efforts to bring new life to her show, she decides to hire a diverse woman, Molly (played by Mindy Kaling) in an otherwise all-white male writer’s room.
This movie is comically-charming. Emma Thompson, brilliantly disappears into every single character she portrays and Katherine Newbury is full of brilliant layers that are beautifully exposed throughout the film. Molly Patel’s character arc was perfectly-paced and Mindy balanced the vulnerability with the strength in a way that kept you rooting for Molly the entire time.
Truthfully the entire movie could have been Emma Thompson, wearing a suit and standing in one place and I would have been absolutely satisfied. Yet, Late Night was so much more than that.
Mindy has paved a way for the women who do not see themselves represented in media, she has taken her talent as a writer and has created wonderful roles that have made a real impact. Late Night provides different variations of strong women without trying to make an argument that one is better than the other. The message that we can all powerfully coexist was a necessary one and Mindy brilliantly brought that point home.
What Late Night got so perfectly right, is that it allowed the topics that currently plague our world to run the narrative of the film while not shoving life lessons down our throat. It felt socially-aware, while still allowing jokes to breathe. This movie was everything my stressed-out brain needed and so much more.
Late Night is now streaming on Amazon Prime.
