I never skip the opening act at a concert, I always make sure that I get to shows early so I can catch every single musical act performing that night and I have yet to be disappointed. Watching the opening act is how I discovered Elle King, it was at an Allen Stone show and I was smitten as soon as she hit the stage. She was Country, she was Soul, she was confident on that stage and I couldn’t take my eyes off of her.
Elle King just released a new single and I find myself obsessing over it, just like I obsessed over all of her other music. “Good Thing Gone” is heartbreaking, it’s soulful and it’s perfectly performed by Elle King.
Neither one of us is wrong
Neither one of us is right
I never fully have faith, you see
‘Cause I always knew you’d fall out of love with me
We could’ve tried a bit harder, mm
I could’ve practiced more patience, mm
Look at this good love we’ve wasted
Another good thing gone
The song describes the end of a relationship and if the subject matter wasn’t sad enough, it’s Elle King’s delivery that breaks your heart. Her vocals carry all of the passion in the world and autobiographical or not, you can’t help but feel for her when listening to the song. This ballad carries a vintage sound and yet feels completely perfect for its time.
I have been waiting for this kind of old soulful song from Elle King ever since I stumbled into a video of her singing her song “Can’t Be Loved”, a song that has yet to be released and that also carries an old soul within the song. Her voice perfectly fits the heartbreak and even in the moments where her voice cracks, you can’t help but feel like she’s achieved a magnificent feat with “Good Thing Gone”. So clear your schedule, grab some tissues and turn this song up; I promise the emotional journey will be worth it.
