When I was younger I stayed away from Latin music, it was one of the many ways that I pushed my culture away. Though as hard as I tried, I couldn’t escape it. My mother cleaned to Juan Gabriel, my tia cried to Pimpinela, my other tia danced to Chayanne and my father drank to Vicente Fernandez. Though everything in me tried to push it away, there is no denying that the passion and power behind Latin music if life-altering.
When I finally started welcoming Latin music into my life, there was one artist in particular that I found myself listening to over and over again. El Potrillo, the Mexican icon himself: Alejandro Fernandez.
Alejandro Fernandez is the son of Mexican legend, Vicente Fernandez but don’t let the relation fool you; Alejandro has definitely made a name for himself in the music world. His ballads make the heartbreaking bearable and they express the kind of love that we are all looking for. His Mexican pride is at the root of all of his music; though it often falls into the Latin pop genre, his voice truly excels with a Mariachi band behind him. I was lucky enough to experience one of his concerts last year, thanks to my work wife Alex, and it was top 5 best experiences of my life.
A performer through-and-through Alejandro has been shining on stage since the early 90’s and there is no sign of him stopping anytime soon. He will be honored by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation, Alejandro will be receiving an award for music on October 1st.
