September 15 to October 15 marks LATINX Heritage month.
LATINX by definition is a person of Latin American origin or descent (used as a gender-neutral or nonbinary alternative to Latino or Latina). In celebration of the month I will be sharing a LATINX creator every day on this website and on my social media accounts (username @juliexplores everywhere). Yesterday I shared the phenomenal film by Writer/Director Issa López Tigers Are Not Afraid and today I must share with you the dynamic duo that is: JOHNNYSWIM.
Honestly, at this point I’m just surprised that this website hasn’t slowly turned into a JOHNNYSWIM fan account. They may just be the musicians I’ve written about the most.
The duo consists of Abner Ramirez, the son of Cuban immigrants and Amanda Grace Sudano, who is the daughter of legendary Donna Summer. Now it’s not only that Spotify’s analytics have told me two years in a row that I listen to JOHNNYSWIM the most on their app, but I truly am casually obsessed with them (respectfully). I have now been witness to their magic a total of five times and they somehow get better and better every single time.
So here is where I try to convince you that bringing their music into your life will make your life exponentially better. Not only do they perfectly harmonize every single time but their songwriting is deserving of all of the accolades.
JOHNNYSWIM’s discography consists of music that quickly reaches your heart and navigates through the best parts of you. Their music is healing and necessary. Amanda and Abner have found a way to make their music and their marriage beautifully coexist and the songs that they put out into the world are slowly making it a better place.
Abner uses music to tell the stories of his family, whether he’s adding a recording of a conversation that his father had with Amanda at the end of a song (“Moonlight”) or expressing his anger towards all of the people who have wronged his father (“Pay Dearly”) or dedicating a song to his mother (“Adelina”); his roots are embedded in his music. This is true for Amanda as well; if anything, I beg that you listen to their song “Georgica Pond”.
Abner Ramirez is the perfect example of the kind of people I aim to celebrate during LATINX Heritage Month. He is proud of where he came from and using his talent to make the world a better place (let me live in my cheesy moment). So if you’re ever in need of a quick pick-me-up, search for JOHNNYSWIM in any music streaming platform and I promise that your day will look at least 70% better.
