Brittany Runs A Marathon is body-positivity done right.
We meet Brittany when she’s an overweight, hard-partying and care-free woman living in New York. A visit to the doctor’s office forces her to start making some life changes and those life changes lead her to make the decision to run a marathon. I mean, we’ve all been there right?
This is the fat girl story that we have all been waiting for. This film is the perfect blend of a drama and a comedy. At it’s core, yes it’s about Brittany’s drastic physical and emotional transformation but Jillian Bell, who plays Brittany, finds the perfect comedic moments. Brittany is a multi-dimensional character and when you’re not rooting for her, you’ll find yourself frustrated by her behavior.
As an overweight woman (who constantly struggles with self-love), I tend to seek out content that represents my struggles and more often than not, I’m disappointed by what I find. That is not the case with Brittany Runs A Marathon, this movie shows a reality that we don’t often get to see.
Breaking News: Your issues with yourself will not magically go away when you lose weight.
Many journeys are had during the film but perhaps the most important one may be the journey that Brittany went through to fall in love with herself, regardless of her weight. Brittany is a flawed woman and Jillian Bell plays that perfectly. Her journey is complex and often frustrating but it’s so absolutely worth it. I found tiny pieces of myself throughout every frame of this film and it forced me to take a long hard look at myself.
I encourage you to go watch this inspiring film; laughs will be had, tears will be shed and it will all be wonderful.
